The spread of Ash Dieback across Europe is well documented, but a new tree crisis may be brewing. Xylella fastidiosa, more commonly known as olive tree scorch has been reported in the Apulia region of southern Italy. The European Food Safety Authority has assessed that the bacteria is very likely to spread, and poses a major risk to the European olive tree stock.
The bacteria prevents water movements within affected trees, causing leaf loss followed by branch loss thereafter. This is a very worrying development for European olive growers, as olive yields may be significantly impacted. The Guardian carries the full story.
