Phase 1 Habitat Surveys

Parastic plantsThe first stage of a habitat survey is to assess the potential of a site for its ability to support protected species and/or habitats. This can be provided by a range of site assessments including an initial appraisal, scoping or walkover survey but a more detailed approach would be a Phase 1 Habitat Survey.

PJC undertake this basic ecological audit of a site as part of a wider environmental assessment. This provides valuable ecological information useful for site management and environmental planning (including supporting planning applications, BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments).

A PJC Phase 1 Habitat Survey and report consists of:

  • Recording habitats and vegetation information for an area
  • Providing a list of dominant species per habitat type
  • Highlighting particularly important features of the site
  • A basic habitat assessment
  • A desk study, prior to site visit to set the context for the field study
  • Information on protected / Biodiversity Action Plan species
  • Advice on the presence of protected areas on or near the site

A Phase 1 Habitat Survey can be extended to include an appraisal of the likelihood of a site to support protected species, leading to specialist protected species surveys.
